Un couple de commercants parisiens, les Roland, retires au Havre. Deux fils : Pierre et son cadet Jean, «aussi blond que son frere etait noir, aussi calme que son frere etait emporte, aussi doux que son frere etait rancunier.» Pierre et Jean ne s'aiment pas, mais la famille vit en paix jusqu'au jour ou l'on apprend qu'un vieil ami des Roland a laisse en mourant toute sa fortune a Jean. Pourquoi a Jean seul ? De ce qui aurait pu etre un banal drame de boulevard, Maupassant a fait une tragedie concise et cruelle, ou affleure le theme du Double qui va bientot hanter sa folie. Et le livre contient, sur la mer, les bateaux, la lumiere, la campagne normande, quelques-unes des plus belles pages de la litterature impressionniste.

Maupassant a ecrit plus de deux cent soixante contes et nouvelles et sept grands romans.
