Andrei Monastyrski’s semi-autobiographical novel Kashira Highway is set in the early 1980s and tells the story of an artist’s nervous breakdown, juxtaposing the gray world of Brezhnev era Moscow and the lurid landscape of the protagonist’s imagination. Translated by Andrew Bromfield and with new illustrations by Pavel Pepperstein. Andrei Monastyrski (b. 1949, Petsamo, Russia) lives and works in Moscow. He is the leader of the Moscow Conceptual School. One of the founders of the group Collective Actions (1976– ), he became its chief ideologist and the author of most of its actions. Together with Vadim Zakharov and Yuri Leiderman, he participated in the groups Kapiton (2008–2010) and Corbusier (2009–2010). In this collaborative volume, black-and-white photographs by London-based Russian photographer Sasha Gusov (born 1960) document the shooting of Russian film director Andrei Konchalovsky's (born 1937) film The Sin. Both taking Michelangelo as their subject, Gusov's photographs resemble Quattrocento paintings, capturing Konchalovsky's actors in stark and meditative poses.

Each chapter of the two Photo Icons volumes focuses on a single image which is described and analyzed in detail, in aesthetic, historical, and artistic contexts. Volume I begins with the very first permanent images (Nicephore Niepce's 1827 8-hour-exposure rooftop picture and Louis Daguerre's famous 1839 street scene) and takes the reader up through the avant-garde photography of the 1920s. Volume II explores works such as Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother (1936) and Robert Doisneau's Kiss in Front of City Hall (1950), up through Martin Parr's 'New European photography.'
